There are two really wonderful things about owning pets. One is having a creature that loves you unconditionally and the other is watching the joy in play that they impart.
Last night as I was relaxing after the long day I came out of my room and watched as our kitten/cat Sophie attacked our beagle, Jughead. She pounced upon him and raced off waiting for him to set chase. Now if it had been any other time of the day Jug may have followed suit but not tonight. It was later in the evening and he was already in the mindframe of bedtime. As she attacked he shook his head and ambled on his way watching her for but a second before heading back into the dining room. Sophie was not to fail she wanted to play. As Josie meandered down the hall, Sophie sat behind the wicker chair right in the living room entrance and preyed upon Josie. Now Josie is a bit larger than Jug, a bit more than a bit outweighing him by at least 80 lbs. This small fact though did not deter Sophie in her adventures though it did make her a bit more cautious. Josie made her turn and her body was half way through the dining room door when suddenly she gave a small yip from her mouth. Sophie’s small head bopped up over Josie’s back as she had caught the attention of her target with her small but sharp claws. Josie whipped her head around to see what was attacking her and looked down at Sophie to see her scurry off back to the safety behind the chair.
It is not uncommon for small occurences such as these to occur. Small moments that let me know that these small creatures are happy and healthy in our home. The times I see Jug, Daisy and Oliver all scurrying around chasing one another in play are some of the best moments to watch. Daisy and Jug’s ears all perked up and their tails a wagging. Oliver barking at them to be included in. It never fails Josie will get up and stomp a large bark at the three of them letting them know she is the alpha of them all and keeping them from getting too far out of control in their play, like a mama dog she watches over them. It warms my heart when Josie and Jug set off against one another. Jug bringing out some of the puppy in Josie from time to time as they pounce and dance around . . . . chasing one another down the hall.
If we all could simply be a bit more like out pets. . . . enjoy the small moments, the companionship of those around us.
