Off to the hunt
Just got back from bringing Jonny to the youth hunt. Pretty proud of him, he signed up for this all on his own . . . . . plus the fact that he really enjoys hunting, enjoys getting out in the woods. Mostly though because he is overcoming obstacles in his life, he is not letting certain things hold him back from learning to do something he really likes doing. A lot of boys, a lot of kids have a parent that is able to teach them, they have places to go to for hunting. He doesn’t. He doesn’t have a father figure who would bring him out and we really don’t have any land where he can go out hunting. It hasn’t stopped him though. I am so grateful for this opportunity for him, for the folks that put together this youth hunt and for the fact that there are some celebrates out there that are willing to sponsor such events; willing to give back to their communities in this case Nascar driver Clint Bowyer.

Jonny has been so excited. He got all of his stuff together this morning – and me being Mom still I couldn’t help but double check his list of stuff he is bringing, lol. As I did, I commented out loud – What am I doing you’re 14, you should be able to handle this on your own :) .

He gets all manly when he is doing something like this. Commenting on how he was going to bring meat into our home with his deer, how much that would help us as a family. A bit of sorrow pierced my heart at that moment, he is 14 he shouldn’t be concerned with doing the manly thing like providing for his family. Yet as it is he is the man of the house . . . . when I need extra help with doing something I would ask a spouse to do he is the one I have to turn to (moving heavy items, wrenching on something my arms just wont move). He is so young to have those thoughts. In their own way though it brings so much pride to him to be able to do those things. . . . so in that way I am very grateful for this two edged sword.

We drove out to Dry Creek, the camp/shooting range. My gaze passed over the land all covered with a good dusting of snow. A smile touched my face as the thought crossed my mind what beauty was before me. The dirt road we traveled down was old and rugged yet well worn. A lone abandoned homestead sat up on a hill. The windows clearly open allowing for a full view of the sky beyond. The sky was overcast as the sun hid behind the clouds. A good day for hunting as my grandpa would have said . . . . fresh snow on the ground, yes a good day for hunting.

Dave Holland is the coordinator of the hunt and I really do have to commend him and all that are involved in helping out. Its an amazing thing to do for young hunters – and this year girls are allowed, too :) . Just such a great opportunity for these young people!!
